Top 4 Romantic Hostel Getaways

We know what you’re thinking – hostels don’t exactly scream romance, right? Boy do we have some news for you!

North Island
South Island

We have hostels near some of the best date locations in the country, and with private rooms available around the YHA network you can serenade your lover without worrying about sleeping roommates.

1. Bay of Islands

We’re a little biased in favour of Paihia and the Bay of Islands; not only is the vibe just so relaxed around the wee township with it’s beautiful vistas, but we’ve got two excellent hostels there. Stroll around the township and grab a meal on the waterfront before retreating to your private room at YHA Paihia, or take on YHA Bay Of Islands, The Rock. If you’re a fun loving couple, you won’t be able to pass up this overnight boat cruise out amongst the islands. Why, you ask? Paintball shooting, fishing, swimming, night kayaking, snorkelling, exploring one of the islands… the list goes on!

2. Hanmer Springs

Hanmer is a well-known location for romantic getaways so this one comes as absolutely no surprise. This charming alpine village makes for a lovely stroll down to grab dinner or some wine, and there’s plenty outside the pools to keep you entertained: mini golf, a maze, hikes, and mountain biking trails, to name a few. Once you’ve had your soak in the hot pools, it’s nice to know your accommodation is only a couple of minutes’ walk away.

3. Punakaiki

This hostel manifests as a series of individual buildings all secluded in West Coast bush, a few minutes’ walk from the beach. If you really want to feel like you’re getting away from it all, this eco retreat has your name on it. The charming main building has a well equipped kitchen and often sells freshly baked bread and muffins; from there, it’s a short stroll through the native bush to your cabin for the night. Try the Stargazer with it’s open-top roof for something a bit different!

4. Glenorchy

Another relatively off-the-beaten-track location, YHA Kinloch, Glenorchy is metaphorically and geographically close to Paradise. This wilderness lodge features absolutely stunning vistas of Lake Wakatipu that are hard to beat. Relax here and let the world pass you by a while; the onsite restaurant means you’ll have not a care in the world.
